CORAZÓN DEL BOSQUE (HEART OF THE FOREST)

COMMUNITY TOURISM :

The community tourism project, "Corazón del Bosque" also known as "Uk´ ux K´achelaj," in the native tongue of the region (K´iche´), was inagurated in November of 2002 as an ecological park that offes the following services: a restaurant with its menu featuring traditional Guatemalan dishes, rustic cabins in the woods, Mayan saunas, hiking trails, a playground for children and a Mayan ceremonial site.

Corazón del Bosque defines is objectives and goals as the following:

  • To lead as an alternative form of tourism that offers guests an enjoyable, inspirational and relaxing environment.
  • To maintain a project that benefits our community by promoting equal participation among its inhabitants, sustainable management of our rich natural resources, along with an effort to conserve and preserve our Mayan K´iche´culture.
  • Promote sustainable forestry by taking care of our region´s flora and fauna (located at the highest point of Lake Atitlan´s protected area), in order to mitigate the deforestation that has been damaging Guatemala´s environment.
  • Iniciate environmental awareness through responsible actions and environmental education.
ECOTOURSIM:

Here at "Corazón del Bosque," we put into practice the definition of ecotourism expounded by The World Conservation Union, which states:

Ecotourism is environmentally responsible tavel and visitation to relatively undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and any accompanying cultural features- both past and present) that promotes conservation, has lower visitor impact and provides for beneficially active socio-economic involvment of local populations.
