The origin of the community
of El Novillero manifested its existence during the Spanish
conquest of Guatemala, which lead to the emigration of the
King of Gumarcaj (Quiche), toward the bordering areas of Sololá,
where you shall find the region Chuchexic, where the village
of El Novillero is located.
EL NOVILLERO is the
name of the community and comes from the word “Novillo”
meaning young bull, which is appropriate due to the fact that
the current proximity was once a large prarie where the community
grazed their young bulls. One can still observe this legacy
by taking notice of the young bulls that that graze on our
land.
In 1957 a North American
missionary began an agricultural cooperative. 10 years later
this cooperative became exemplary for Guatemala and Central
America.
In the back part of the valley you can find a beautiful pine-oak
forest that is the location of "Corazón del Bosque"
that directly benefits the community by generating jobs for
the local population.
